Scenarist BD v6.0 Release Update

We have received overwhelmingly positive customer response regarding the pending release of Scenarist v6.0 and Designer v3.0. Facilities and customers from around the world have emailed us with their support and enthusiasm.

As you may know, Scenarist BD v6 and Designer v3 software was intended to be available in January 2015. As we began the task of modernizing the foundational elements of the Scenarist code, we anticipated that we would require updated libraries from several third-party technology providers. Unfortunately, the business agreements to update these libraries took much longer to complete than anticipated due to matters outside of our control and ultimately this delay impacted the release date for the new versions. Please accept our apologies for this delay.

Below you’ll find the key design elements for Scenarist BD v6 and Designer v3 as well as a little information about our our development methodology. Please note that this list of new features and updates will be added incrementally via a series of software releases in keeping with the Scenarist development schedule.

Scenarist's Development Methodology
The Scenarist product team operates using the “Agile” engineering methodology. This means that we operate in small teams to create software releases in two-week increments (called, “sprints”).  At the start of each sprint, the team reviews a list of items (the “backlog”) that is prioritized to choose what it will work on during the next sprint.  Each sprint is a self-contained effort; the fixes or features in that sprint are chosen with the goal of being completed within that sprint.

Our goal to produce frequent, regular software releases with smaller sets of fixes or additional features in order to keep your user-experience improving, and to meet the demands of our changing market.

Ultra HD Blu-ray Update

The Scenarist Ultra HD Group (UHDG) has started to receive strategic updates and key information about Ultra HD Blu-ray. Scenarist has engaged with the BDA on an aggressive development schedule that culminates in the initial Scenarist UHD release for UHDG members in September 2015.

As you may know, the BDA has targeted the commercialization of the UHD format extension for Blu-ray Disc to be available in Q4, 2015. That means, new players, new 3048 resolution HDR displays, and lots of new features designed to engage and delight users with a premium 4K experience. UHDG members will be the first facilities to be able to deliver Ultra HD Blu-ray titles.

Last week, the BDA held a Technical Expert Group (TEG) meeting in Osaka, Japan where many details of the new specification were discussed and debated. These items will be further discussed next week (09-13 March) during the next BDA General meeting that is taking place in Santa Barbara, CA. As a BDA Contributor Member, Scenarist is involved in the discussions and leading the effort to develop the next industry standard authoring system to deliver Ultra HD Blu-ray.

Watch this space for exciting announcements during March and the run-up to NAB in April.

Scenarist Tips & Tricks

Have you ever needed to create a DVD play-all sequence comprised of video segments that have a different number of audio or subtitle streams?  Most authors believe that such a sequence will have a limitation of being unable to skip back through segments. However, with this simple trick below, you can overcome the limitation; here’s how:

  • In the track editor you create all your segments with equal number of audio and subtitle streams, using dummy or blank audios and subtitles in empty streams.
  • Then in the scenario editor, at the title level, you set the Audio/Subtitle Availability Flag Policy to custom.
  • Finally, you check mark the streams that are valid streams and you uncheck the dummy streams.

With these simple steps, you can deliver the play-all sequence complete with the ability to skip-back through segments.
